Sugar, Spice, and Everything Nice

Why hello, Wednesday! Since I only have time to post once this week (yes, yes I know), I figured Wedding Wednesday would be the day to grace the blogosphere with our presence. We have SO much going on here at BBC, I can barely contain myself! I want to share with you all of the marvelous plans we have in the works, but I will refrain.

What I can tell you, however, is that I've got the bug. You know. The baby bug. I confess to instant smiles every time I see kids ask the cutest questions of their mothers in public. Babies smile at me, and I melt. I live vicariously through my pregnant friends and newly mom-ified friends. I just love kids a little bit more now than I ever did before. I can't explain it. It's just there.

Naturally, then, I wanted to gush over these fabulous frocks by Ulrike Bogo. While every flower girl is magnificently cute, these flower girl dresses just ooze with cuteness. It's as if Ulrike took everything we assume about flower girl dresses and threw it out the window. Modern and streamlined, all of the flower girl fluff has been removed from these dresses, while basic beauty remains.

While children may not be in my immediate future, Ulrike Bogo is definitely getting bookmarked.

Okay, can I just tell you ladies something? This Real Wedding has been a LONG time coming on Bona Fide Bride, and frankly, I couldn't WAIT to share it with you. Why? Not only was it captured beautifully by the one and only Christina Kiffney (love her!), but because the bride and groom successfully pulled off the 'at home' wedding every girl has dreamed about since, oh, age five.

As a wedding planner, I know how much work goes into an at-home wedding. I just know. The tent, the rentals, the logistics, the exit signs required by the town, coordinating the cook tent location with the caterer to ensure your food is still hot by the time it gets to the table... and to look like it all just naturally 'happens' that way, to boot.

Laura and Rob did all of this while aiming for a very important goal; keeping their guests comfortable and the moments memorable. I think it's safe to say they succeeded. From Laura's gorgeous gown to the group of children having a grand old time, we love every little detail about this wedding.

From Christina: "Laura and Rob celebrated their wedding at their beautiful mountain home that they prepared for months ahead of time to create a lush, intimate surrounding for their guests. The natural feel of the wedding showed through in the decor, lighting, flowers, cake, and even the pretty little flowing white flower girl dresses. Cupcake Liner DIY Crafts {they're a piece of cake!}

Hi there! I’m Sarah from the wedding blog A Paper Proposal | Inspired Weddings, and I’m happy to be a guest today on one of my very favorite wedding blogs – The Bona Fide Bride (duh)! If you’ve visited me over at A Paper Proposal before, then you probably know that I have a particular fascination with paper. Even if you think I’m crazy, you have to admit – it seems as though there isn’t anything that you can’t do with it! As brides continue to incorporate paper into their wedding and event decor in more unconventional ways (beyond the standard invitation, of course), the more imagination we lend to otherwise basic items like lined paper notebooks, polaroid photos, ribbons and one of my personal favorites, cupcake liners. Those little paper cups really are a wonder, aren’t they?!

Hang a wreath in your home during the holidays, or consider hanging them on the backs of the bride and groom’s chairs at a wedding reception.

Strung party poms and pomanders, because it just felt wrong leaving them out of this roundup.

DIY Lanterns

Hello Bona Fide Bride Readers! Alicia, here from The Charity Wedding! I am more than delighted to be here with you today and give Kristin a much needed break. Since we are heading into the weekend I thought it would be fun to provide a DIY tutorial just in case you had the crafting itch this weekend! This project would be perfect for your wedding, your next party, or even just for home decor. These would be a fun addition to an office space or even a nursery! With a simple switch of the colors, they could fit in to any event or space. The project is from Martha Stewart.

You'll need:

A Paper Lantern- available at most craft stores
Tissue paper
Double stick tape or glue
A Bit of patience!

Cut the tissue paper into circles or try to buy it already cut. Start by sticking the circles to the bottom of the lantern and work your way around. Overlap the layers as you go.

Continue sticking on the circles...

Once it is completely covered, you are done!

You could easily make different sizes, use a variety of colors, or even use different colors on the same lantern to create an ombre effect! I will definitely be trying this! Imagine how lovely it would look with lights inside of it!

Inspiration to Reality: Sparkle & Blush

Hello Bona Fide Bride readers! I’m Gaby of Cap Classique (a blog all about weddings in Cape Town, South Africa). I’m super stoked to be guest posting for Kristin here, and since her blog is all about showing how to put inspiration into practice, I thought I would create a buyer’s and DIYer's guide to one of my inspiration boards, Sparkle & Blush. The idea behind this board was to incorporate the current trend towards glitter and metallics in a soft, romantic way. I ended up using a palette of pale pastel pinks and greens, accented with gold, and I absolutely love it! Here’s how to recreate the look for your wedding.

Sparkly gold shoes are everywhere at the moment, and these are three of my favourite in different price brackets. {Top} Ash from Miss KG by Kurt Geiger {Centre} Christian Louboutin Lady Glittered Peeptoe Pump {Bottom} Miu Miu Gold Glitter Peep Toe Pumps
Bling up your wedding dress (or your bridesmaids) with a gold bolero or shrug. You can pick up some very cute ones on eBay from time to time, but I love this little number from Etsy seller Isla New York.

Gold crowns make charming cake toppers (see my full feature on these here) and are a signature look for photographer Elizebeth Messina, who took the picture in the original inspiration board. These aren't easy to come by, but I've found this pretty option available on eBay - hm, may have to buy one of these myself!
For the featured picture, a square of sparkly gold material had been found, and you may have some luck searching through your local fabric shop. As an alternative, try making place cards or a runner from gold glitter card (available here or at all good craft stores). You can see an example of how lovely it looks here.
How pretty is this pink lemonade? You can find it at Trader Joe's. Or, if you'd like to make your own, Martha has a recipe. Place it in a large glass jar (pretty free downloadable labels here) or bottle it yourself, adding these printable labels.
These shutter escort card holders are so pretty, and you can make them yourself using these instructions.

Other DIY elements:

Vintage teacups: The ones pictured can be hired here, if you're in or near Chicago. Otherwise, check out local vintage rental companies, charity shops, yard sales, eBay and the back of your relatives cupboards to create your own pretty collection of teacups for display or for guests to use. Or you could turn them into teacup candles and spread them out on the tables as part of the decor.
Bead bracelet: If you love the look of this bracelet tied with ribbon, why not try making it yourself? This tutorial is for necklaces, but could easily be adapted, and there are lots more online.
Pistachio macaroons: Lovely, delicious macaroons. But I'll warn you, they're difficult to make! (Which is probably why they're on the expensive side to buy.) If you still want to try, you can find a recipe here.
Sparkle hearts: These are easy to create yourself. Either buy some of the glitter card mentioned above and cut hearts into them, or go old school and dust glitter over card hearts that have had a layer of glue added to them. You'll get glitter everywhere, but feel like a kid again. :) Add sticks and use as drink stirrers or place settings or even escort cards.

DIY: Canvas Welcome Bags

From Chandra: Hey y'all! Chandra from Oh Lovely Day here. I'm so happy to guest post for Kristin while she is on a much needed hiatus. I wanted to share with a DIY project I did for my own wedding. I've been to a lot of weddings. AAAAA LOT! And as an out-of-town guest, I have always appreciated a good welcome bag. So when I was planning my wedding and knew a majority of our guests were coming to California from all over, I vowed to make them as comfortable as possible.

I wanted to make my welcome bag a little more personal than the generic brown or colored paper bag with a couple of things thrown in. I wanted them to include what I believe are necessities. And I wanted them to be easy and inexpensive for me!

Materials for the bags:

Canvas tote bags (from cheaptotes)
Iron-on printer paper (from office depot)
An iron
A printer
An image to print

We had a monogram that we included on our save-the-dates, invitation suite, and other wedding details, and I wanted to put in on our welcome bags. I had to reverse the image so that when it was printed and ironed on it would read correctly. I bought enough tote bags to accommodate each out-of-town couple or guest for our wedding. I printed a coordinating number of monograms. Then I found a hard surface (a table works well- an ironing board does NOT work as well). Follow the directions on the transfer paper packaging. I laid an old pillow case down on the table, put the tote on top of that, and placed the printed paper where I wanted it on the tote. Then I ironed each image on until I had done enough totes for everyone.

Next you have to fill the bags. Here are what I consider essentials:

2 bottles of water (this is the most important thing, and one bottle is NOT enough unless for only one person!)
Snacks (in ours I included special K cereal bars, a bag of chips or crackers, and a small bag of Isabella's Cookies, which are made where we had our wedding and are my absolute fave!)
Hangover helpers (tums, advil, etc.)
A map of the area and activities & restaurant recommendations
Mints and/or gum
An itinerary of events, including any shuttle departure times (if applicable)
Sunscreen (if in a beachy area)

Here is a picture of our finished product, complete with itinerary and other items with our monogram:

Total approximate cost per bag = $6

Making your guests feel welcomed, comfortable, informed, and hydrated....priceless.

When I heard what Cris of Kiss My Tulle would be posting about today here on Bona Fide Bride, I almost squealed. We're all wedding guests at one time or another, so whether you're plus-sized or petite, these ensemble ideas are just the ticket.

Wedding Stationery {and the Art of Timing}

As many of you know, I am on a 'life' hiatus... so I couldn't be more honored and thankful that some of my fellow bloggers will be filling in for me while I am away! I am thrilled that Jenna of Heartcarry Press and Little Bit Heart will be the first guest blogger in a series on Bona Fide Bride, and I couldn't wait to share her with you!

I'm Jenna, the Heartcarry Press part of Little Bit Heart, where we design custom papergoods. The most frequent wedding stationery questions we get are all about whens: when do we mail out save the dates? When do we start the invitation process? When do we order day-of papergoods? I know that your wedding paper can be a bit overwhelming, so at least knowing when things need to be done can be a great first step :)

Let's start with save the dates, since they're the first piece of wedding paper that goes out. These should be mailed 6 to 12 months before your wedding. If your wedding falls on a holiday (hello, New Year's Eve!) or if you're having a destination wedding, you want to be closer to the 12 month side. It's a good idea to start contacting stationers around 3+months before you'd like these to go out.

Once your save the dates are out, you'll move on to the next step: the invitation process. Your invitations should be mailed out 6 to 8 weeks before your wedding- we use 8 weeks as our guideline for our custom clients. Again, you'll want to get in contact with your stationer at least 3+ months prior to your mailing date, especially since your invitation suite will most likely be more involved than your save the date.

After the date is saved and the invitations are mailed, don't forget about those pretty paper details for your wedding day. This means your placecards, programs, table numbers, signage, favors... whatever you'll need on the day of. Timelines get a little tighter here, since you may not have the information for your placecards or program until the last couple of weeks before your wedding. Try to talk to your stationer about these pieces during the invitation process- they may want to order the supplies when they place your invitation supply order.

Hopefully these guidelines will help you plan your papergoods timeline- happy planning!

Hiatus.

I hate to do this. I really do. But I need to take some more time to get some things squared away in Real Life. You see, my dad isn't well.

My dad suffered a severe brain injury one year ago due to medical malpractice and we have to get him on Medicaid so he can get the care that he needs. Getting on Medicaid is no easy task if you're a middle-class, working American. Trust me on that one. Unfortunately, commercial insurance doesn't pay for a whole lot when you need long-term care. Ironically, Medicaid pays for everything commercial insurance doesn't. In helping my mom with this process, and everything I have going on in life, I just don't have time to blog for another week or so. It pains me to say that, but Real Life comes first.

So thanks for understanding, and I can't wait to get back to blogging... I miss it dearly!

Parties, Wine, and SHOES.

I've been super busy with family stuff lately (and will be, over the next few weeks), so please forgive my sporadic posts. For now, I'm back to the blog, another party down, and another year older! Jamie's bridal shower was a lovely, outdoor affair complete with tissue paper rosettes and lanterns hanging from a tent, and two (yes, two!) themed dessert tables full of yummy treats. Jamie is such a sweetheart and it was so enjoyable to spend the day with her family and friends. Can't wait for the wedding!

In other news, I'm OLD. I celebrated a birthday over the weekend(!), and I'm now in the final stretch of my 20's. I must say, this was the most awesome birthday I've ever had. My husband and friends surprised me with a rhythm and blues lawn concert at a winery, complete with picnic blankets, hors d'oeuvres, and tasty wine. It was such a beautiful night; the kind of night in which you'd love to just fall asleep on a blanket under the stars anyway, even if there wasn't live music. Or wine. Or dancing to music only our parents could love, in a barn, under string lights.

We are convinced the dance floor was magical, since our two single friends Jeff and Dan walked onto the dance floor and in each case, a beautiful single woman just happened to be standing there alone with no dance partner, eyeing them up. I swear, as soon as one of our single friends walked onto this dance floor, there was a supermodel waiting for him. We thought this was HILARIOUS. Except for at the end of the night when one of the girls tried to basically marry Jeff. Which was, in part, also kind of hilarious. (I mean, I love weddings, but...) In all, it was definitely a night to remember. We knew it would be cool, but not that cool. Those are the best nights, aren't they? Le sigh.

Lastly, this is my first Tuesday Shoesday post EVER. Why, I don't know. (I went to fashion school, for gosh sakes!) But I was searching for something online last night and somehow got sucked into shoeland, and came across THESE:

Now TELL me you don't want these Valentino Crystal Bow Satin Pumps. They are never something I would have considered for my own rustic wedding. But will someone please wear these for their wedding so I can live vicariously through you? Thanks.

A Real Apology Involves Flowers.

Alright, I know what you've been thinking. I've been MIA for the past few days. You keep coming back to see what new and exciting things I have in store for you, and nada. So this is me saying I am sorry:

Actually, that's a mouse holding dollhouse sized daffodils with a peculiarly small piece of floral tape around the stems. But you know what I mean.

Truth is, I've been super busy with some RIT (that's 'really important things' to all you Kristin's Random Acronym novices) and for now, blogging takes a back seat. Real life comes first. (There, I said it!)

So I will be back within the next week or so. And I will have some amazing new things to share with you, like event sneak peeks (not peaks... because there's nothing sneaky about mountains), and fabulous real weddings. So hang in there! Over and out.

Oh So Beautiful Bunting

First of all, how was your holiday weekend? My husband Adam and I were super busy, but it was great to take a quick work break to spend some time with friends. It's so easy to lose that 'spark' when you spend all your time working and not enough time loving. I am making an active effort to love more. After all, it's what we were born to do, isn't it?

At one point during the weekend, at a friend's barbecue, I happened to watch my husband for a moment when he thought nobody was watching. He listened intently as someone told him a story, and he smiled from ear to ear as he heard something that amused him. In that moment, I was reminded what a caring and compassionate person he is, and how handsome he looks when he smiles. It was one of those moments when I was just so completely enthralled in being in love with my husband.

I am so blessed. Summer love isn't just for the unmarried.

DIY Project: Sweet, Whimsical Paper Lanterns

It comes as no surprise that I spotted this incredibly feminine (and totally unexpected) take on paper lanterns in Martha Stewart. A refreshing take on the classic paper lantern, these seem to promise fluttery movement in a gently breeze, and added dimension to a lightbulb hung inside them at dusk.

Though I have the urge to make a million bagillion of these and frolic through them, flailing my arms at them as though they were pinatas, I will refrain. Instead, allow me to share the oh-so-easy instructions so that you, my lovelies, have the cutest little paper lanterns on the block.

Once in awhile I come across an amazing site that just inspires me to the core. As a wedding planner and event designer, I need to be super savvy when it comes to sourcing hard-to-find items and antiques for my clients.

I often purchase select items that my clients request again and again so that I can rent them out as an exclusive service to my clientele. Of the many items I rent out to my clients are gorgeous, vintage-looking cake stands for dessert displays. One shop that offers a wide variety of these lovelies is Sweet & Saucy Supply, the brain child of dessert guru Melody Brandon-- and division of the renowned Sweet & Saucy Shop dessert studio-- in Long Beach, California.

A Dreamy Spring Farm Photo Shoot

So um, whew, HELLO 11pm. My day today was so completely overflowingly full of real-life wedding meetings and consultations that I haven't had the chance to post until now. But I wanted to share with you the throbbing of my heart that is this styled photo shoot by Michelle Masser, shot on location at a historic farm in Pennsylvania.

What I love most about this shoot is that it combines every little piece of pretty that I adore, from birds' nests to vintage clocks to wooden birdcages and candlesticks to vintage suitcases. The flowers? Heavenly. That cake?! Scrumptious. What's more, the images are just so warm and cozy, it's like sunlight in pictorial form. I just can't get enough.

A Hidden Villa Engagement Session

When I chose this engagement session to share with you all, I couldn't help being drawn in by all of the rustic, natural elements. There's a reason rustic is still so charming. It's comfort. And to me, rustic is home. I grew up in rural New Hampshire, and for the rest of my life, rustic farmlands are where I will feel at peace.

This engagement session submitted by Erica B Photography really resonates with me. Not only because Hidden Villa is drop-dead gorgeous, but because it's a place where Courtney (Phillip's bride-to-be) spent a lot of time growing up. For the same reason I will always feel at home on a farm, Courtney felt at home at Hidden Villa.

So take in the olive groves, Courtney's bouquet (love a bouquet for an engagement shoot!), the beautifully-captured light and, most importantly, a couple in love; one of the few things that never, ever gets old.

Unless you've been stranded on a desert island for the past six months (in which case, I find it very odd that you'd have internet access), you know that Vera Wang has designed a line of bridal gowns for David's Bridal. The line debuted with the Spring 2011 Collection, including gowns, headpieces, sashes, and other accessories.

We're excited for the Fall 2011 Collection, set to debut June 22nd (mark your calendars!) and to include shoes and bridesmaid dresses ranging from $158 - $200 in price. These luxe bridesmaid dresses will come in seven styles in a range of colors including orchid, amethyst, charcoal and champagne.

A Modern SoHo Wedding

I'm so excited to share today's wedding with you; not only because it's completely gorg, but because it was photographed by New Jersey-based wedding photographer Kyo Morishima. Janna, Kyo's wife and business partner, is one of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Together, they make a great pair. When I received this submission from them, I knew it would be amazing and unique before I even opened it.

From Janna: "The wedding of Christine and Michael, who got married on March 18, 2011, took place at Public Restaurant in Soho, NYC. They wanted a very simple, modern, intimate wedding, and I think they got exactly what they wanted.

When we posted some of the images on our Facebook page, I commented that if I could get married again, I would do exactly what Christine did: get married in a small, groovy restaurant (first, because I'm a foodie, and second, because I think small spaces usually make great parties). I was surprised when a bunch of people commented on my post that they felt exactly the same way!"

From Christine, the bride: “One of my favorite parts was going outside to take photos. The bustling streets became part of our wedding, and we became part of the fabric that truly was just another day in our amazing city.

The Difference Between a Wedding Planner, Event Designer, and Other Professionals

One of the most common misconceptions among brides and grooms is a wedding professional's job title, and the responsibilities and talents associated with it. While working toward the common goal of making your wedding day fabuloso, the job responsibilities of each of these professionals is actually very different.

You've heard the job titles and are now in a state of confusion; so to help you learn the roles of each wedding professional, it's time to break it on down.

Wedding Planner
A wedding planner is well-versed in wedding coordination, budget allocation, and the best wedding professionals for your budget. Handling the details of your wedding, this pro has great relationships with area professionals and can also often get you discounts or add-ons. From day-of coordination to guidance every step of the way, a wedding planner will usually customize his or her services to best meet your needs. Here at Bella Bridal Consultants, wedding planning is the core of what we do. As a member of the Association of Bridal Consultants, we're part of the largest and oldest group of wedding professionals worldwide, with the most comprehensive training in the industry. A wedding planner is often your best advocate, and as someone impartial to a venue or church, we have nobody's interest in mind but your own.

Event Designer
While a wedding planner is strongest in the logistics and planning of your wedding, an event designer shines when designing the aesthetics of your wedding. This is where the 'wow' factor comes in. An event designer doesn't just refer you to stationery or favor companies, but has the ability to create things from scratch. If you're envisioning a die-cut wooden cursive sign hanging above your custom wedding altar made of vintage doors and wrought iron gates, an event designer is the one who can make this a reality. A great event designer has all of the tools to create the details to make your wedding unique, from a workshop to electronic cutting machines and the inside scoop on where to find the right props for the job. In addition to wedding planning, Bella Bridal Consultants specializes in wedding design, ensuring your wedding has that 'wow' factor that is otherwise hard to achieve.

Ceremony Site Coordinator
Employed or contracted by the ceremony site or church, the ceremony site coordinator is there to make sure the ceremony site rules are implemented. When getting married in a church, the church coordinator is usually essential to your wedding day. The duties of the ceremony site coordinator might include, among other things, directing you and your bridal party to the right room to wait for the ceremony to start, making sure no candles are lit and that no birdseed is thrown. Your wedding planner, as your advocate, will work with the ceremony site coordinator with your best interest in mind while ensuring ceremony site rules are met.

Reception Site Coordinator
Employed by the reception site, a reception site coordinator is often a salesperson working on behalf of the venue. In addition to booking weddings for the venue, a site coordinator works with you to receive all necessary paperwork before the big day. Often the reception site coordinator is on-site on your wedding day, making sure the linens on the tables and covers on the chairs match your order. Although most reception site coordinators are not trained and accredited wedding coordinators, some actually are. Though they typically won't help you secure your other wedding professionals, they will often hand you a list of wedding professionals who have done weddings there in the past. Sometimes the venue gets a referral fee for these vendors, and sometimes they don't.

Florist
A florist's bread and butter is to provide floral arrangements to the general public for life events such as holidays, birthdays, and weddings. Most florists operate out of a storefront. Some florists have taken professional floral design classes, and some are self-trained.

Floral Designer
A bit different than a florist, a floral designer specializes in designing floral arrangements for events on a larger scale, such as weddings. Floral arrangements for smaller life events, such as birthdays and holidays, take a back seat (if these services are even offered at all). Floral designers are usually professionally trained in floral design and many have participated in design competitions. Floral designers specialize in 'wow' factor floral arrangements that are cohesive with the overall design of the event.

Caterer
Caterers play a very important role in your wedding, and have a lot on their plate (no pun intended). They work with you to create an ideal (often customized) menu that flows nicely throughout the event. With focus on the food, the catering team consists of many individuals, each with a specific job. The catering team, though amazing at what they do, does not specialize in setting up the design elements of your event or securing discounts for you with other wedding professionals. They can, however, suggest a list of professionals they have worked with in the past. Except for providing a pre-ceremony beverage bar or similar food station, the caterer is not involved in the ceremony details of your event.

Trend Forecast: Makin' Whoopie

No, it's not what you think {but I don't see that-- eh hem-- ever going out of style...}. While cupcakes and cake pops have had their day, I think it's time to shift the wedding spotlight to another sweet treat: whoopie pies. With flavor combinations such as red velvet cake with cream cheese filling and chocolate cake with salted caramel filling, it's hard to resist the versatility of the whoopie.

As a gal ~~born and~~ raised in New England, I am no stranger to these sweets. But what I find so funny is that my friend in Texas had NO. CLUE. what whoopie pies were. So whether you remember them from childhood or are daring enough to try them for the first time, I highly recommend this book to show you how it's done.

Summer Kick-Off: A Jersey Shore Engagement Shoot

Okay, can we believe it's Wednesday already? What a difference a holiday on a Monday makes. I'm lovin' it. In a non-McDonald's kind of way.

Now unless you've been living under a rock like this guy, you know I live and work at the Jersey Shore. Though this weekend was a fabulous kick-off to the summer, I must tell you, the traffic at the Jersey Shore is UNREAL. Not because Snooki is here (well, we all know she's in Italy, anyway), but because the Jersey Shore is GORG and everyone wants to come here.

Want to see how beautiful my hometown really is? I just about squealed out loud when I received this engagement shoot submission by Jenelle Kappe. She captured Liz and Colin's day at the shore perfectly, and it immediately won a place in my heart on location alone. The dreamy photography, adorable couple, and the best arcade games known to man are just a {gorgeous} bonus.

From Jenelle: "Liz and Colin are one of the best couples that I have photographed. Liz had told me a few weeks before their engagement shoot that what they "love about photography are the hidden moments and hidden beauty". This was music to my ears. This offered me the chance to step back and allow Liz and Colin to just be . . . them. With minimal directing, only asking them to stand in a certain area, I was able to naturally capture them being them. There is a high I get when I have a shoot like this. Capturing the moments naturally as they occur and not forcing them into the shot is an amazing experience and feeling."

When You've Chosen the Wrong Wedding Gown: 10 Tips that will Save You

I feel compelled and qualified to write this, as I fall into the category of 'Poor Souls who Chose the Wrong Dress'. Granted, my story had a happy ending; I knew how to recognize the signs and made the switch to the right dress before it was too late.

For the sake of efficacy, I will divide this post into two sections: 'How to Avoid Choosing the Wrong Gown' and 'How to Tell When You've Chosen the Wrong Gown.'

How to Avoid Choosing the Wrong Gown

1. Never purchase a gown without trying it on. All gowns look amazing on models. All knockoffs look amazing in eBay pictures. But this is real life. You may love a gown in a magazine, and hate it on you (this happens a lot). Never, ever, ever buy a gown sight unseen.

2. Go ahead: post your potential gowns on an online forum and ask for opinions. I say this because, well, I know you're going to do it anyway. Even though you'll never meet these people and their opinions shouldn't matter, they will. Don't wait until after you buy a gown to post a photo and have everybody 'nay' it. If you're considering a few gowns, post them and see what people think. If your selection is reassured by others, you're more likely to stay in love with your gown post-purchase.

3. Only bring constructive critics to your bridal salon appointment, and choose the gown you like. This appointment should be a happy one in which you choose your dream dress. Not your mom's dream dress. Or your grandmother's dream dress. If your guests in tow are very influential people in your life, make sure you don't choose a gown just to appease them.

4. Picture yourself walking down the aisle. Are you wearing this gown? Gowns are like men; if you're committing to one and dreaming of another, it will never last. If you've had your eye on your dream gown, but you're settling for another, it's never an easy situation. If you know in your heart that you'll never get that dream gown out of your head, leave the salon without making a purchase. Look into buying your dream gown used, or just take a few days to ponder whether or not you'll be happy with the other gown.

5. Remember: Alterations change everything. When you try on a sample gown, it's a size 8 or 10. Oh, what's that you say? You're a 4? Too bad. The 8 is (usually) what you're trying on. Though your salon consultant will use clips in the back to pull the gown snug to your body, the gown you order is not going to look like that. If it's a sweetheart neckline, the cut of the bust will be different on a smaller gown than the larger one you have on, and so on. Your real dress will be altered to show your best 'you'.

How to Tell When You've Chosen the Wrong Gown

1. Do you generally try hard to please the people who accompanied you on the appointment? If so, there's a chance you chose a dress just to make your mom cry, or your grandmother smile. I'm not going to say you have to have 'that moment' where you cry and exclaim, "This is the one!" (I didn't have that moment... in fact, I initially chose the gown my mom liked on me), but you do need to know in your heart that it's the one you want. Ask yourself: "If I came alone today, would I have still ended up with this gown?"

2. Did you know this gown existed before your appointment, or was this an impulse buy? If the bridal consultant brings out a few random dresses you've never seen before, tread with caution. On one hand, the consultant does know what gowns look best on your body, and she may bring out some great contenders based on what you told her you wanted. However, there's a fine line between falling in love with one of these gowns, and just falling in love with the experience of trying on wedding gowns, period. My advice? Don't purchase a Random that day. Ask the consultant to take photos of you in it, and go home and sleep on it. If you wake up in the morning in love with that dress, then it really could be The One.

3. Did you immediately have that 'bad' feeling upon walking out of the bridal salon? Usually, when you choose the wrong dress, you just know. Immediately. When I left my salon appointment, I felt mixed feelings: I was elated, with tears in my eyes, at the experience of getting to go to Priscilla of Boston in Manhattan with my mom and sister. It was a true bonding experience for us, and my mom was genuinely happy with the dress I initially chose. But underneath the elation, there was doubt. I wasn't crazy about the gown I had just purchased. I hadn't been stalking it online, and I didn't even know it existed before my appointment. It was the one my mom loved, so I bought it. But I knew right away that I wanted to try on one of the other dresses one more time. That other dress was actually The Dress, and I realized it within a few hours.

4. Twenty four hours have passed since you purchased the gown; do you still feel that 'bad' feeling? If that little birdie in your head keeps telling you there might be another dress, that little birdie is usually right. If 24 hours pass and you're still feeling that 'oh no...' feeling, pick up the phone and call the salon. Tell them your situation, and take action. Perhaps all you need is another chance to go into the salon (alone this time) just to try on the sample once more to verify that it is, indeed, The Dress. Maybe you need to try on another contender, just to make sure you made the right choice. The sooner you address this, the better... and no need to tell anyone in your family that you did this, if you don't want to.

5. Are you still looking at gowns, even though you have one already? Don't. That's all. Just don't. Will you still look for husbands after you're married? No, silly. Once you've found the one, you've found the one. Now: my advice to you is to NOT hang your gown in your own closet. Stop looking at it. You could be the proud owner of a brand new Vera Wang, but if you look at that baby every morning and night, you're going to grow sick of it. Zip up that garment bag, and transport the dress to hang in your mother's house (or similar location). Let that gown be 'new' to you on your wedding day!

If, after reading these tips, you feel you've chosen the wrong gown, call your bridal salon immediately. Don't consult with your family, don't cry about it, just call the salon. Ask them if they've ordered your gown yet, and what your options are given the situation. (Then talk to your family.) Most bridal salons will be able to work with you if you give them enough notice, but if they can't and you're stuck with the dress, there's a chance you will learn to love your gown. Once it comes in, and you get to see your gown all clean and new (and altered!) and yours, you just might fall in love all over again.

New Jersey Vintage Farm Engagement Session

What I love most about being a blogger AND real-life wedding planner is that I get to experience the best of both worlds: working with the best New Jersey wedding professionals, and then posting their work for all to see!

Kristen and Darryl's vintage engagement shoot by local New Jersey wedding photographer Kay English is near and dear to my heart, for a few reasons: first and foremost, because Kay is one of the nicest and most talented photographers I've had the pleasure of knowing. Secondly, it captures the beauty of Holmdel Park and the beautiful light oh-so-well. And lastly (do I even need to mention?) Kristen and Darryl are just naturals in front of the camera.

A Rustic Ranch Wedding

As we conclude another productive week at Bella Bridal Consultants, I am finishing up a design sketch for a wedding at a beautiful private home right on the beach in Long Beach Island. I am gathering nearly 60 lanterns to transport to a wonderful wedding in Pennsylvania next weekend, securing hotel room blocks for another wedding, and compiling notes for florist and cinematography meetings (two hours apart). I am piecing together inspiration for a vintage, indie barn wedding in the fall (and another barn wedding, rustic and romantic this time, in the spring). I am helping a couple sort through photography packages for their 2012 nuptials at Mallard Island Yacht Club. And if that's not enough, I'm preparing for a gluten-free pizza party (design meeting) for what promises to be a breathtaking wedding at Bonnet Island Estate.

Needless to say, the work never ends. It gets stressful at times; not gonna lie. But through all the task lists, project management, meetings, and more, my passion for this business remains true. No matter how much effort it takes to reach perfection as a perfectionist, whenever there's passion, there's a way. There's nothing I want more than for my clients to be swept off their feet on their wedding day.

This brings me to the reason I wanted to feature Ross and Melissa's Real Wedding submitted by Alex M Photography. The passion that went into the design of this homemade wedding is evident, and it's clear this was a labor of love. The wedding took place at the bride's father's ranch in Texas, which is where Melissa dreamed of getting married even as a little girl.

Jan, Melissa's mother, worked alongside event designer Keely Thorne to create her daughter's dream wedding. Jan played a huge role in the planning of the wedding, and even made the beautiful bouquets out of silk flowers (proof that silks can be gorgeous!). Family friends also played a role in the wedding, creating the cakes (believe it!), florals, and other projects. At the end of the night, as a midnight snack, guests were served taquitos from Whataburger. (If you didn't already wish you were a guest at this wedding, I bet you do now!) The newlyweds shared a picture-perfect kiss under an arch of sparklers and stars, and I have no doubt that they will live happily ever after.

YES. I am dedicating an entire post to... water. On 'Wedding Wednesday', of all days. But my Big Lots find was just too pretty to keep to myself. I learned today what happens when Evian and designer Christian Lacroix have a baby:

Behold. The prettiest bottle of water you have ever seen. Pretty enough for your wedding. Rumor has it that designer Christian Lacroix debuted this collaboration with Evian during Fashion Week... 2008. This is not new news, people. But STILL. Water doesn't go bad (does it?) and it's only $1 a bottle. So seriously, ladies. Buy this! One dollar is a steal for a bottle of water these days, and it's certainly a steal for a vase, right? ;)

How to Set a Table

There are a few things I learned along the way on my journey from pigtails to cocktails. One of the most useful-- as a wedding planner and, well, a human being-- was learning how to properly set a table.

I know what you're thinking; my caterer will do this for me. And yes, he/she probably will. On your wedding day. But what about the other 364 days this year? And for the rest of your life, when you tie the knot and begin hosting your own chic soirees? Yes. This is why we are going to learn this, right now. I may not be your wedding planner (okay, well for many of you, I am!), but it's my basic duty to eventdom to make sure I bestow the basics of entertaining upon you savvy bona fide readers.

If there’s one thing I tell my clients about engagement shoots, it’s to utilize a number of different locations that tell ‘your story’. Finding one great location is nice, but finding five great locations is even better. If one doesn’t work out, or you’re just not ‘feeling’ it, you’re not putting all your eggs in one basket. A good photographer will have a few spots picked out already, or at least be willing to let it happen naturally.

I love how Vanessa of Vanessa Joy Photography does just that. We featured one of her New York City engagement shoots on Monday (if you haven’t had the pleasure of seeing it, you can view it here), and we couldn’t help but share another one with you today. Jessica and Jason’s engagement shoot made me feel like I know them personally; almost as if I’m following them through their Perfect Date. One that ends with a rooftop kiss? Yes, please.

New York City Engagement Shoot

As I write this post, I am blessed to be sitting on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. (And I don’t mean the Jersey Shore.) The aquamarine waves are rolling upon the fine white sandy beach as I watch the honeymooners take their strolls.

My husband and I had been, admittedly, out of the ‘honeymoon stage’ for awhile already. Though we got married a mere six months ago, the four jobs between us (and my dad coming up on a year in the hospital now) brought a quick end to that ‘honeymoon stage’. And before we got married, we didn’t even know what people meant by that. But now we do. And it was over.

But being halfway across the world, away from all the hustle and bustle of New York City, has brought peace to our souls and our marriage. For awhile I was (oddly) half considering couples counseling, when really, all we needed was a couples vacation. I can say, without a doubt, that we’re back. And it wasn’t hard to get there; we just needed to make the time.

Being here has reminded me that there is more to life than working four jobs, commuting a couple hours each way to work, and getting home just in time to make dinner at a ripe 9pm. So I just want to reach out to anyone who is anything like us. The gals in the blogosphere who are working x-number of jobs just trying to get by in your 20’s, in search of the American Dream. I admire you for that, but please don’t lose sight of your marriage. Once this wedding is over (and it will be, in the blink of an eye) comes the marriage. The daily fight worth fighting. So put your marriage first, and keep it there. Always.

1940's Vintage Engagement Shoot

What I love most about blogging are the little moments that simply make my heart flutter. These moments remind me how much I absolutely adore weddings, and how much I adore love. Love never gets old. I can never get enough of it. I live for it. I mean, don't we all?

When I received this submission from Josh Snyder Photography one night, I had had a really rough day. The kind of day when you trip over your pant cuff with your stiletto, get a ticket because you paid for the parking spot next to yours, or get stuck behind a dump truck that somehow delivers a kamikaze pebble straight into your windshield. How about all three in the same day? Yah. It happened. And then some.

I was up late that night (1am, to be exact) working on client weddings when I heard the familiar chime of my inbox. Being the crazy e-mail checker that I am, I decided to read that one last message before bed. And I'm so glad I did. Because this engagement shoot submission was the thing that pulled me out of that rut. I just fell in love with it. And I couldn't help but share Josh's work with all of you, because I have a feeling you'll fall in love with it too.

From Josh: "DJ + Amber love the 40's look and wanted to shoot the session somewhat in that style. We shot at the local Railway Museum as well as renting a late 30s Chevy to shoot in a pecan orchard. They bought the luggage at a local vintage shop and Amber's hairpieces at an online vintage apparel store."

A Regal Philadelphia Wedding

As I sit and type this, I am drawing a close to another amazing weekend in my life. While weekends are the time {most} people kick back and relax, it's the time when I really kick it into high gear. My husband Adam had a charity race yesterday morning (in which he finished second... you GO Glen Coco!), and after that we hit up the great city of Philadelphia.

Whilst in Philly, Adam went to a Phillies game for a bachelor party while I had the opportunity to meet with two great new clients. I had a few hours(!) to kill in Philly by myself, so I walked around Old City for awhile, treated myself to an ice cream at THE Franklin Fountain, and met up with two great friends for a Parisian-inspired street fair and {not Parisian-inspired} sushi. Despite the fact that I earned incredibly painful blisters from kicking it in my Matt Bernsons all day, it was truly a great day in the city of brotherly love.

I'm excited to share with you this wedding in that great city of Philadelphia, and the love that ensues. Lindsay of Lindsay Docherty Photography was so kind to submit Brianne and Scott's wedding, and I was so flipping excited to see that it was a 'local' wedding. Likewise, I was thrilled to see it was a military wedding. And one with a beautiful dress. And beautiful shoes. And bride. And, true to the city itself, love.

From Lindsay: "Brianne and Scott celebrated their elegantly classic wedding at Pen Ryn Mansion in Bensalem, PA, about 30 minutes outside of Philadelphia, on a perfect day in October. It was sunny and 70 degrees after several days of miserable rain and temperatures in the mid 50s. The breeze coming off the Delaware River was just right. Bree looked incredible. Her ballgown from Ashley's Bridal Couture had intricate beading and Belle-type pickups. I adore the red bloom she had in her hair. The ladies were in candy apple red floor length evening gowns, complete with red shoes and red opera gloves. Bree's mother, Kim, is an incredibly accomplished quilter and created the ring pillow for the day. Sunflowers are Bree's favorite so they made appearances throughout the day. Scott is a Marine and showed up in his dapper dress blues. He was stationed in Hawaii and the couple moved there a few days after the ceremony for a very extended honeymoon. Their ceremony ended with a dramatic Hollywood kiss and sword arch. Ten bridesmaids and ten groomsmen and one ring bearer. And holy cow what a good looking group! The reception started with gorgeous light coming in the large windows in the ballroom. The place looked great. Seating cards were handmade and attached to mini pumpkins."

A Vintage Mill Wedding

When you woke up this morning, did you realize that today is a day to go down in the history books? It's actually a really cool thought. I am so ill-prepared for the Royal Wedding, it's not even funny. I didn't bake yummy scones. Heck, I don't even think I have coffee, let alone tea. I'll be sitting in front of the television with my Ezekiel 4:9 cereal with almond milk and a banana. Because that's just how I roll.

So as the Royal Wedding goes down in history today, in all its opulence, I wanted to focus instead on a cozy, love-filled wedding right here in the 'States. Submitted by Elisabeth Connolly of Elisabeth-Rose Photography, this beautiful vintage Virginia wedding is the perfect way to end the week.

First, a little background on Bethany {the bride}. Bethany is my kind of girl. Why? Because she waited patiently for the right man to come along. Some gals wish their lives away hoping to fast-forward to the point in their lives at which they meet The One. But Bethany trusted in the Lord and used her time wisely to serve in the ways He intended. Patience is a virtue, and by golly, Bethany has it. You go, girl. So now, let me share with you this WEDDING.

Aside from the real, bonafide love these two share, I especially love the vintage cameras next to the 'new' photos of Bethany {the bride} and Jared {the groom}. Anemones in the bouquets perfectly complement the ones on the scrumptious cake, and a vintage chair lends an interesting element to the bridal party portraits. What's more, the vintage items throughout the wedding double as home decor as Bethany and Jared start their lives together. What a romantic reminder of the wedding day, don't you think?

Trend Forecast: Bridesmaid Photo Shoot

And it's Wedding Wednesday! (Can I get a 'woot'?) We have so many amazing things going on this week, I had to remind myself to pause and write this blog post!

I think it would be SO. AWESOME. to have a photo shoot with your bridesmaids before the big day. I don't mean a 'wear your bridesmaid dresses and smile pretty' shoot. I mean a 'let's have fun and show some personality!' shoot. Take this opportunity to let your bridesmaids wear their prettiest dresses (you can wear your favorite casual white frock!) and get some props together... Why not?

What better way for your girls to get to know each other, and for you to get comfortable in front of your photog? I can totally picture this going down during the day of your bachelorette party or bridal shower. (And heck, hire that photographer to document the rest of the festivities, too!)

You know what I hardly ever do? Post about the guys. The cinnamon to our sugar. The ebb to our flow. The groom and groomsmen, admittedly, don't get enough air time on Bona Fide Bride. So today, we're going to change that. This one's for the boys.

Although spring weddings are synonymous with peonies, robins eggs, and other beauties, they're also the time for seersucker. It's one of my favorite fabrics and, like your favorite little white frock, it can only come out to play for a few months each year. So join us as we give a nod to the men's attire that changed it all.

Bridal Shower Idea: Wine & Cheese Tasting

Bridal showers can be... intimidating. Sitting in front of a sea of ladies while opening their gifts and playing (sometimes awkward) games isn't exactly comforting. Appreciative as we may be for those moments, they're not always easy.

If you're the type of bride who doesn't like to be the center attention, consider a non-traditional shower idea such as a Wine & Cheese tasting! It involves the whole group and takes some of the attention away from you, and with wine and cheese, everybody wins. I mean, who wouldn't want to come to this shower?

Anemone Love

Before I begin, I have to share this great story from my weekend. It's one of those stories that makes you realize you learned something from the experience, never to be forgotten. I was driving to a client meeting yesterday and on the way to the highway, I drove down a road cluttered with doctors' offices and retirement villages (a brilliant combination, don't you think?). On the side of the road was an old man walking with his wife. They were moving ever-so-slowly toward the doctors' offices, but what caught my eye was this: the man was escorting his wife by gently taking her hand in his, her elbow in his other hand. She could barely walk, but he escorted her like a gentleman in love, after all these years. It was so gosh darn romantic, and proof that while your wedding will come and go, true love in marriage will last forever.

So as we kick off another great week at Bona Fide Bride, I thought it would be fitting to feature a flower; a flower that starts out small and blooms into something beautiful. I want to shine a little light on one of the most gorgeous, versatile flowers I know: the anemone. In season from November to April, the anemone works just as well for a modern wedding as it does a vintage wedding.

An Elegant Texas Wedding

Well, it's Friday. It's been one of the busiest weeks I've had in awhile, and my weekend proves to be no different... more client meetings! I tend to take these meetings so seriously as I throw my heart and soul into every single wedding I plan and design, because I want so badly for each of my clients to have their perfect wedding. It's kind of an obsession.

Speaking of perfect weddings, I couldn't help but share Jessica and Rob's nuptials captured by the wonderful Alex Maldonado of AlexM Photography. This gorgeous Texas wedding proves that everything really is bigger in Texas... including weddings! The florals for this wedding are nothing short of fantastic. The aisle? Perfection. The love between family is so evident, and clearly of utmost importance over all of the beautiful little details. I could go on... but I'll let you see for yourself!

Five Tips for DIYing Your Wedding Flowers

I know, I know. Flowers are expensive. There's no denying it. But for a moment (and just a moment), I'm going to put my 'rational' hat on the shelf to say that this is your wedding. You do deserve to have pretty flowers. When else will you have an excuse to hold a beautiful bouquet of peonies, ranunculus, poppies, dahlias, and all the other beautiful flowers we drool over in all the Real Weddings we so faithfully stalk online?

That said, if there's no budge in your budget, you can't get water from a stone. Here are some tips to help you along the way:

1. Consider hiring a professional florist. Yes, I did read the title of this post. But before you decide to go it alone, I strongly (bold AND italics... I mean business!) suggest meeting with the pro before you rule her out. Let's face it... her work will look better than anything you can put together. She has years of experience ordering quality flowers from a cost-effective source, not to mention her design talents that will save you hours upon hours of time the day before (and of) your wedding. The days leading up to your wedding are priceless, and believe me, you won't have much time to assemble centerpieces. The savings from DIYing your flowers are only temporary, but those photos last forever, honey.

2. Know the costs of the flowers you want. DIYing your flowers doesn't necessarily = cheap. Here is a list of prices per stem for some of the most popular wedding flowers, according to The Martha:

Amaryllis: $6 to $8
Anemone: $1 to $2
Aster: about $1
Calla Lily: $2 to $5
Cosmos: about $1
Daffodil: less than $1.50
Dahlia: $1.50
Delphinium: $1 to $2
Gardenia: $8 to $20
Gerbera Daisy: $1 to $3
Gladiolus: $2 to $3
Heather (filler): less than $1.50
Hyacinth: $1 to $3
Iris: $1 to $1.50
Lilac: $3
Lisianthus: $1 to $2
Ornithogalum (Star-of-Bethlehem): $1 to $2

3. Order your flowers through a florist. According to Amy Hardin of Details Weddings and Events, "Order your flowers through a florist, not a large store like Sam's Club. That way there's quality control." You never know where that big-box store is getting the flowers, and you miss out on having someone examine each stem for freshness and beauty. A flower shop thrives on the quality of their flowers, so inquire to see what your options would be there.

4. Practice makes perfect. Blogger (and real bride!) Cris Stone of Kiss My Tulle emphasizes the importance of preparation. "Practice, practice, practice... And do them the day before." Practice making arrangements for your dining room table in the months leading up to the wedding (even if it's with cheaper versions of your wedding flowers, to start) so you get comfortable cutting and arranging flowers. Sarah, editor of the blog A Paper Proposal, stresses to "keep it clean, simple and uniform!" (Ever heard of the phrase K.I.S.S.? 'Nough said.) A couple weeks before the wedding, make your 'practice' arrangement out of your actual wedding flowers. You'll get an idea of costs, what they look like 'together', and how to arrange them.

5. Get acquainted with your blooms. It's true... flowers are on their own schedule, not yours. Event designer and blogger Lauren Grove of Every Last Detail reminds us to "know the behavior of certain flowers. Roses take a few days to open up, so you need to get them ahead of time." Sound like a lot of work? Well, it is. When in doubt, reference tip number one!

A Rustic Vintage Vermont Wedding

As a gal raised in the boonies of New Hampshire, there will always be a place in my heart for New Englanders. I don't know what it is; I can just relate to them. Meeting a New Englander in my daily routine is like finding that chocolate chip cookie in your lunchbox. It immediately brings you back to younger, comfortable times and is so satisfying.

When I received this wedding by AlexM Photography, I got that warm and fuzzy feeling all over again and I actually felt like I was a guest at Cameron and Jason's wedding. Though the snow on the ground was plentiful, I felt nothing but warmth when I saw their gorgeous wedding day. If I had a winter wedding, this is what I would have wanted it to be. An Indian Wedding in San Francisco

I am so intrigued by the beauty of Indian weddings: the fabrics, colors, mehndi, and of course, the LOVE. What I love most about these weddings is that they're all about bringing two families together, just as much as they are about the bride and groom.

Needless to say, I was over the moon when we received this Real Wedding submission from Joy Marie Photography. Anjali and Girish-- the bride and groom-- were married at beautiful City Hall in San Francisco. Perfectly captured by Joy Marie, the whole experience is just breathtaking!

Inspiration Board: {Perfectly Peach}

So I'm lunching alfresco at Starbucks, soaking up the (semi) warm spring weather, sipping my skinny vanilla latte, and observing the emergence of spring fashion. I'm thrilled to see the savviest of fashionistas breaking out their sandals and their brightly-colored ensembles, from aquamarine to persimmon and every color in between. I, too, have been bottling up this yearning for spring and want to shout it from the rooftops in the form of colorful skirts and feminine blouses. Unfortunately, I wore gray today.
